Getting apartment outside Unilorin

University of Ilorin being a Top University in Nigeria enjoys a large share of the amount of Students Choice of Instithon in the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)'s exam registrations. With information gathered from online sources, Unilorin is said to be Second most preferred choice of Institution following closely after University of Lagos (UNILAG). This has lead to increase in Population size as about 7000 new students are admitted yearly and about 6000 graduated yearly too according to the last released Admission List and Graduating list.

The School has facilities for accommodation within the school premises for both Students and Staffs of the Institution in form of Hostel and Staff Quarters but that of the Students is grossly inadequate which has led to many students securing apartments in areas not far from the University Main Campus and the Mini Campus which is situated at Oke Oyi. The main areas include Tanke Oke Odo, Jalala, Tanke Bubu, Tanke Tipper garage, Ajanaku, etc. Hostels have also been built by private enterprises. The most popular one being K-dorms.

The problem now lies in getting such apartments after missing the opportunity to secure a room in the school hostel. The school hostel offers a lot of advantages to students such as
-nearness to class area.
-nearness to Library.
-Good and available social amenities such as Water and Electricity.
-It's very cheap compared to others.
- Optimal Security. Etc.

You can get an apartment in various hostels outside the school in the areas aforementioned through the following ways-
1. Living with a friend or a guardian already living there.
2. Going through student Caretakers.
3. Going directly to the Caretakers in charge of such.

The first option is good but it may not be good for a person that likes privacy. So the second and third option is what we want to know about.

Student Caretakers usually advertise available slots at the beginning of a new session. You can find such adverts on the notice boards all around the class areas. All you need to do is check out the phone number and call the caretaker to FIRST take you to see the apartment and location before payment. We urge you to be very careful. Never pay before seeing the apartment as either the apartment or the location might later be a problem for you.

Things to look out for when choosing an apartment.

1. Nearness to School. We don't expect you to secure an apartment at Kulende when the School is at Tanke.
2. Nearness to the Road. Please check to see if you can trek the distance from the place to the road withing 7 minutes. If it's more than that, it's not too good for you.
3. Availabity of Facilities. In a house that you'll live for a whole session, you'll want to make sure you have Good Toilets and Bathrooms. Also, make sure you have a place where you can do your washings and spread your clothes. You can always do your kitchen work in front of your room.
4. Check if there's Water and Electricity.
5. Is there a Security Guard? How safe are your properties?
6. Presence of other students. It's good to live in an area with more students as information coming from school can get to you easily and you can form useful friendship with them. Don't be a lone ranger.
7. Is there a Church or Mosque nearby for Prayers? This is especially necessary for Muslim Students. God is a very important factor in choosing where you live. Choose wisely, Choose with God.

By the end of the second semester, graduating students will be leaving their apartments. That will be a very good time to start searching for one too.

As a Student caretaker, you can always contact us to help announce available slots with you.
