QUALITY REPRESENTATION WE ASK FOR BY AGBOOLA AFEES AKINOLA

Its here again. We were waiting anxiously for it and now its here. The semester we've always been waiting for, eagerly anticipating for the activities its gonna deliver to us. Many of us fear this semester more than we fear losing our life not for any reason more than the fact that this semester finally determines our achievement CGPA wise for the session but it is also the semester that finally nail the coffin of any first year student to either stay on campus or face the well dreaded 'Tanke'.
The rain semester is known to be filled with social, sporting, religious and obviously political activities while academic activities- lectures, tests, assignments- will be going on simultaneously regardless of the other activities. Some students view the earlier mentioned activities as distraction to academic pursuit and decide to face their lectures, tests and assignments while some believe that the activities are part and parcel of the academic programme so they give maximum attention and participation to them likewise. The other group of students combines both the academic and other activities successfully and still comes out victorious. This last group have learnt how to combine both very well giving each activity the required time and attention without causing harm to the others. This is also the semester where ambitions are born, killed, nurtured, changed, etc. Many people with long time ambition to contest for political offices may kill, nurture or change same while many overnight ambitions will also surface. But the fact that someone has been nurturing an ambition for a long time does not guarantee success at the poll likewise coming up with an overnight ambition does not lead to failure. All depends on destiny.
But what is most important to note is that many want to contest without having the rudiment of what the office entails. Some only want to be called the President when they cannot defend the rights of their students in the face of oppression, unethical policies and inconvenient management decisions. Some cannot even read their constitutional duties off hand. Abi what is the essence of a Secretary who does not know the meaning of the blue, red, black and green biros? Who cannot differentiate between correspondence, letter, memorandum, etc.? A Secretary, who cannot prepare a minute of the meeting. The Fin. Sec. without the knowledge of cash book, profit and loss account. Fin. Sec. that cannot distinguish between cheque and check. The Welfare Secretary that cannot cater for his/her own welfare not to talk of the welfare of others. Members of the executive that do not know their constitutional duties. How do you want them to perform and deliver? Most painful are the unqualified and unfit Honourables who go to the House just for personal gains, honours and ambitions. Some of them are in the House just to grind personal axe and display unwarranted ego. No knowledge of the constitution and a clear focus of what their Faculties and their Students want. But they all (the Executives and the Legislatures) do this to the detriment of unsuspecting students ( Unilorites) because the latter pay little or no attention to their activities. They believe that these people they've elected into power hold no responsibility to them than to occupy the offices they have voted them into.
The above notion must change. It is high time Unilorites realized that Unilorin is a microcosm of the bigger society Nigeria and it is this mentality of 'we don't care' that we transfer to the Nigerian political terrain. We should start voting into power the most qualified, intelligent and articulate candidates and not the most popular who will be redundant after all. Our potential contestants should also reassess themselves. You don't have to contest because people are contesting, because your friend is contesting or because they ask you to contest when in actual sense you know you won't deliver but if you eventually contest, win but fail to deliver, remember, people are watching and waiting.
To the greatness of Unilorin, Unilorites and Nigeria.
